why can't you eat before surgery
They don't want you to aspirate. That means throw up laying down and it going down into your lungs. That could be deadly.
They don't want your stomach to get upset in the middle of it
because by doing so you are more likely to vomit while under the anesthetic and suffocate from it
Yes .. like others have mentioned they want to prevent a patient from suffocating on their own vomit or allowing vomit to enter the lungs...Can be quite serious while under such heavy sedation.
If you're getting put to sleep then because of the medication they give you
cause when you eat before surgery your stomache is diegesting food so it can make the operation that much harder to work around a working stomache so to speak that and vomiting
Anesthesia causes some people to vomit during & after surgery. An empty stomach helps eliminate risk of choking.
To avoid aspiration.
