When did it become correct to say 'different than' rather than 'different from'? Is this 'Proper English'?

Different from is the correct statement. Different than, can not apply reason is because the word do not agree with the correct grammar. Different from, makes sense because it shows the difference between two things while different than, shows comparison of two things.
