It is not possible for someone to swallow the tongue. There is a small piece of tissue behind the teeth and under the tongue known as the frenulum linguae, which keeps the tongue in place and prevents swallowing.

Well, that's a touchy one. No, it's not actually possible to fully swallow your tongue, as it is attached by the frenulum linguae, as someone mentioned above. An incident tearing the tissue could occur but that's extremely rare, so let's not get into that.
*However*, ictus (a stroke/seizure) or a state of lowered awareness (aka being high) could cause the tongue to roll backwards and result in a smaller quantity of air flowing in (and a smaller quantity of CO2 getting out) and thus, end up in indirect asphyxiation if the condition lasts for too long. Also, the tongue bumping the palatine uvula (the lump at the back of your throat) could cause vomiting and choke the person since the tongue could block the way out (that's a longshot, honestly).
No it is not possible. It is an old wives tale that people swallowed their tongues during seizures etc. Check this site: http://www.webmd.com/epilepsy/what-to-do-during-a-seizure and one of the items in things to not do you'll see the info about the tongue. It's webmd site and trustworthy.

It is probably possible to swallow your tongue if you cut it off but you would die before you could. So therefore the answer is no because your tongue is connected and held in place by a tissue in your body called frenulum linguae. If this wasn't helpful then look at all the other answers that are EXACTLY THE SAME!
Yes. In the Civil War, when they amputated someone's limb, they told them to bite the bullet, so they don't scream. If they screamed, it's possible they could have swallowed their tounge (it's happened before).
yes, it is. my mom and i were just talking about this! if you have a seizure, you loose control of your mussles, and your toinge could roll down youre throat... doesn't that just make you want to hold onto your tounge???!!!!
well if u swallow ur tounge u would hav to do soem thing with ur lower jaw u know wat dont do anything y would u even ask the freakin ? go yto the nurse at ur school or go to the hospital for all i care and ask them can u swallow ur tounge an dif the nurse sslaps u ii dont care cause i would do the same thing u must be a stupid child
I swallowed my tounge when I was 14. Obviously i didn't fully swallow and digest it........swallowing your tounge is a term used for when the tounge muscles relax causing the tounge to fall backward and block the airway. The I only reason I lived that day was because of two nurses who were out watching a show in the same place as me, they noticed I was chocking, I am one very lucky lady.
I actually have broken the little pice if flesh that is supposed to hold your tongue down. It snapped when I was in third grade. I can actually swallow my tongue any time i want. I know weird right?! I am able to feel the back of my throat with my tongue. I am also able to breath when my tongue is back there some I'm not sure if it can really cut off the airway.
