Do some native americans in CA prefer to be called Indians

Report as

They are neither Natives nor are they Indians. There are no Native Americans. Everybody came from somewhere else. They are more closely related to Southeast Asians than Indians. It's just Columbus and the Spaniards were lost while trying to find a shortcut to Asia and thought they had reached Asia so he named the people he found Indians. It just caught on for some reason.

well, if we are going to retrace our steps back to the beginning of time, then you should be called African and I should be called African as well, since it is theoretically possible that we came from there.

Or so the theory suggests. But a theory remains a theory as long as it remains unproven. As for myself, I prefer to identify as post Pangean.

I believe it is politically correct to call them native americans, Indians seem to be more derogatory.

The Native Americans were only called Indians because Christopher Columbus thought he was In India. What were they called before Columbus came?

I've heard both terms. I think it's a matter of personal preference.

I've lived in CA for 13 years, been to many pow wows, and have friends of that culture. It seems the older folks says Indian more often than the youth.

remember that only because they say it is not okay for you to say it. I'm glad you care of how to be proper with them.

I'm respectful of all cultures and an anthropology nerd. If I were to say anything personally, I would say Native American. Not only out of respect, but it gets confusing when people use the word Indian for two completely different groups of people.

I would look at them first then meet them, get to know them and then you'll find out. If you don't want to do that I would just run down the street poke them in the stomache then scream as loud as you can... ''INDIAN!''
And I am part indian soo, your choice
