Should i buy a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun?

I am going to be doing deer and small game hunting with it. I am looking between a Benelli Nova 20 gauge and a Benelli Supernova 12 gauge. Maybe a Remington 870 as well.

First of all, have you checked the price difference between a Nova and a SuperNova? Either gauge will work for deer and small game. Personally, I would go with the 12. More knockdown power for the deer, and you can adjust your shotshell choices for small game.

I didn't think I'd be able to get close enough to drop a deer with a shotgun with how jumpy they get here, so opening day this year I take out my Marlin .30-30 and drop a buck at 15 yards. I was kinda bummed that I didn't use my 12 gauge.

15 yards! Wow, that had to have your heart pumping! I guess a good clean kill, no matter the gun is all that's important. Congrats!

Thanks! I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. Clean shot through the neck, dropped instantly. It was staring me down so I wasn't going to wait for it to turn broadside lol. I even recovered the bullet from the deer.

I would buy a 12 gauge shot gun and then go with a slug.

I just pray you utilize the animal, deer, from the rooter to the tooter so it's not killed for the thrill of the hunt...

If you're deer hunting with it, I'd go with a 12 gauge. A 20 gauge *can* kilI a deer, but a 12 would be more effective and have a little more range.

Use a good rifle for the deer. Save the shotguns for the birds

In my state, you can't hunt deer with a rifle. Slugs or blackpowder.

Bow and arrow? Never heard of rifle restrictions. Hmmm

If you want a remington go with the 887 not 870. Its a 12 gauge nitromag tactical. Its a lot nicer in my opinion. Go with the supernova 12 gauge if not the 887

Im pretty sure that a Remington 870 is a real gun. One of the most popular shotguns in the world, probably the most.

Favorite deer hunting guns around here are 12 gauge slug, 30-06, or 308. The .22 can kill a deer but it's illegal in some states because it's unethical (the deer dies slowly unless it's a head shot).

If you're not sure what to buy, talk to some friends/neighbors/relatives who've gone hunting and ask them to help you shop. Go to the range and shoot different guns to see which YOU prefer. No reason buying a 12 gauge if you don't like the way it feels - you'd never go hunting.

I personally use 30-06 but you can also use .270 as well

The best shotgun I ever had was a 870 20 gauge with a 26" improved cylinder for birds. But for deer I would use a 12 gauge with either a full choke or modified. If I had to choose one gun for everything it would be a 12 gauge 28" improved cylinder good for birds good for deer at close range and short enough to maneuverable in tight spots. If your going to be shooting deer at more than 30 yards you could buy a extra barrel with full choke. Easy to swap out on the 870.

No full chokes with a slug! You'll f-it up and lose accuracy.

I never had a problem with a full choke and a slug but I never shot one at more than 30 yards. your better off with a slug barrel if your going to use slugs. I personally would rather use a rife on deer.

Get the supernova. You can shoot all 12 gauge from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch. 12 is better than 20. are you in a state that requires you to use a shotgun to hunt deer? cause a rifle is better, no way can a shotgun slug shoot as far and more accurate than a bullet, unless required by law forget about a shotgun to hunt deer, even a 243 vastly superior to a 12 gauge slug.
