Where did the name dolly come from for hand trucks?

Report as

One definition of the word 'dolly' found in the Oxford English Dictionary is basically any contraption that resembles a doll in some way. Apparently in about 1901 someone decided that a small wheeled platform looked enough like a doll to give it the name as well.

I think it was probably used in relation to the size of the small platform compared to a large wagon or truck. Or big vs small.
