Why do you wait to start diesel engine till wait engine light goes out?

Report as

The light is for your glow plugs , which are use to warm up the chamber in cold weather . Besides they are much easier to start when the light goes off .

The "wait to start engine light" indicates that the air in the engines cylinders is too cold to start the engine easily. Therefore you must wait until the air is pre-heated by either individual glow plugs for each cylinder or an intake manifold heater that pre-heats the air for all the cylinders at the same time. The colder the outside air temperature the longer the pre-heater device must run and the light stays on. Diesel engines are different than gasoline engines in that they depend on heated air produced by cylinder compression to ignite the diesel fuel where as a gasoline engine uses a spark plug to ignite the gas.
