What are some easy ways to get teenagers to clean their room?

Report as

Take a picture of their room and threaten to put it on facebook. It worked for my 11 year old daughter... Havent had a problem since. Hahaha. I'm such an evil mom...

LOL! I'd say you're a good Mom. That's a really ingenious solution! Very good idea!

If only we'd had Facebook when my kids were still at home. :-)

And if only I'd had YOUR imagination :-(

Easy. I tell my 16 yr old that I won't let anyone borrow my car who isnt responsible enough to keep his room decent.

Dozy that goes for the husband too! He has a tougher time grasping that concept. I asked my son once who was he more afraid of making angry. He said," Hmm, Dad's big- used to play football, was a bounty hunter and a soldier... definitely you Mom".

I'm like bellydancer, there are no trips to the gun range, no driving, no going to a friends house, or having friends over if he doesn't keep his room clean...and I mean clean! No, I don't bounce a quarter off his bed...yet!

... And bottom line- he will clean it because I said so. Period. I bet you parent a lot like I do TL. I've got a long fuse, but once someone lights it...GET READY.

Love that "yet".

Yep! Exactly the same here!

Tell them if they don't clean it, YOU'LL clean it, and there's no telling what you'll throw out. It worked on my kids -- most of the time.

@gymast1011...as a mom, may I say that you sound like a great kid!

haha good for you kid! but the money she would use to buy me things she wud just give me so i can get it myself, my mom is a busy women so i also help her with her kids plus mine.. so its actually not bad its just for when i would be alil tired at times and even when i was sick.. i would clean it either way but that was just an extra for when i needed to save. i dont see u coming up with anything better :)

Just, PUHLEEZE don't pick up everthing in the kid's room and put it in the middle of his/her bed. I read that one time in a magazine and thought, "Why not? I've tried everything else!"

So, I piled trash, books, candy bars, dirty clothes, clean clothes, and a few assorted pieces of 'I don't know what' right in the middle of her unmade bed. (She was in the hippie yucky flower-child stage at this time--some of you might remember those times.) That night, she moved some of it around, threw some of it on the floor, and made a hole in the middle of junk on the bed big enough to sleep in. She was, and is, all of five feet tall.

Guess what her chosen profession in life has been for 20+ years? She owns and operates a cleaning business!

Just remember: "This too shall pass."

Sometimes I just get bothered by how messy my room is and feel like cleaning it. I don't know why. What works for me (when I don't get bothered by it or just don't "have time" to clean it) is my mom says we can move stuff in my room around. But everything has to be clean first. That always works, at least on me! If that doesn't work, go with the "I'll put a picture of your room on Facebook" thing. That should work ;)

If they have a car.. take the keys from them dont let them drive ! Just take stuff away from them that they like the most.. If they like getting on the computer dont let them on until they clean their room.. Dont let them go anywhere when they want to leave the house

give them something for it. when my mom parents make a that for something, like "if you dont do it then your not getting this. or your not going there" then it jut makes me mad or want to do it less. instead make something good out of it. like "if you can get it clean by dinner, you can pick out dessert" :) works for me
bt the way im 13 this is what my mom always does for me and its what i do for my brother with his homework

Do not pay them, it sets a precedent that you will reward them if they do some thing that is expected and does not deserve a reward.

Hey, try bribery lol. Well, to tell the truth, a teen is just like any other person. What you think is junk is another man's expression. You want a clean room and your teen want's his/own space. You can compromise by allowing your teen to paint or decorate the room that's suits her/his tastes. They keep it clean but you don't come checking or picking up after them because you want to know what's going on in their lives. Respect is two-sided.

Tell them they can't use any electronics, they can't go anywhere but school and church until its clean. If that does not work, tell them you will clean it yourself and get rid of everything that you think is junk. That will get them cleaning! :)

Take away their phone, find an embarrassing baby pic of them and threaten to give it to their friends. You can also bag their room in trash bags and make them earn it all back by being more responsible

You tell them that as long as they live in your house they will listen to what you say. And you are thinking about making the food they HATE for dinner every night. Say you're thinking about getting rid of the cable and internet, at least for them. Ask them how they like having clean clothes to wear b-cuz you might have forgotten how to do their laundry. None of this should be necessary, your kids should respect what you say. I never told my parents no, b-cuz I knew a whoopin would be comin quick, but kids don't have to worry about that no more.

bribery works for me, but also taking the door off until the room is clean.

...well okay, my mum used to take my door off when i slammed it as a child, and i never slammed it since. it's the same theory right?
