Sociologists believe that we are all products of our environments. Our environments (culture/ethical backgrounds) impact our beliefs about marriage and family. As an American we would be inclined to believe that marriage to more than one person is wrong. However, there are countries that practice polygyny and polyandry and find it to be a completely acceptable practice. Family roles are also determined within the context of our environments. Many cultures consider the role of the wife to be submissive while others may view her as dominant or equal. In the same respect views and beliefs about family are related to our upbringing. Some cultures encourage individuality with offsprings leaving the family after maturing as opposed to families that only emphasize the family and frown on individuality.
