Rarely used any longer, a cartouche was an oval plaque, usually attached to to a coffin or burial place of kings or queens in ancient Egypt. The cartouch contained the name of the decedent as ancient Egyptians believed that you must have your name written down somewhere in order to avoid disappearing after death. For more, see
