Hanging a chandelier. The ceiling has 3 wires red black & white. The fixture only has black and a silver wire. What do I connect to what?

What kind if coating is around the wire? Is the wire old ? Old house? Let's get some info before we tie any wires together.

It is an old apartment building where I live. For the wires on the ceiling there is a black, white and red as I said. Plastic coating kind of over them....for the actual chandelier there is one sliver wire with nothing over it, no coating. Then one black. I think I may call an electrician because I almost killed myself. Ha

In most situations, black goes with black, red with red and white with yellow. In this case since there since it's different connect black to black and the rest to a silver one. If it's complicated contact an electrician.

Ones live ones neutral and ones an earth. Your new fixture doesn't have an earth so join the live with the live. black is normally live.
