How can I tell if my cat is cold?

It's been pretty cold here lately, and he insists on staying out a lot. Just wondering if I should be trying to get him to stay in more.

Cats are pretty good at taking care of themselves and knowing what they need. If he wants to go out, go ahead and let him. Make sure he has a warm place to curl up in the house, maybe near a heater vent. If you really think he might be cold, feel the inside of his ears, near his head. If it's tepid or lukewarm, he's probably fine. He'll probably be pretty cold there if he's just come inside, so wait a while for him to warm up before you check it.

Cats has an internal heating system and they don't become dangerously cold too often. If your cat has been ill and is shaking or trembling this could be a sign of extreme cold and of something going wrong inside the cat.

When a cat is cold it will curl up in a ball and may use its tail to cover its face. This is normal.

You should never, for your cat's safety let them be outside unless they are in a secured area. Being hit by cars, attacked by other animals, catching diseases etc are the biggest killer of cats that are allowed outdoors.

Do your cat a favor, don't worry about their temperature ( they do have a fur coat after all ) and keep them indoors.

We foster cats and kittens for the humane society, and putting your cat out is tantamount to abuse.

Poop! Safety is great and all but my cat insists on going out into our yard. I can't tell him no. He's safe. Neglect my ass. He should live a happy somewhat free life. Yes use caution letting your cat out. But no it's not neglectful!

Kitties are great at taking care of themselves when it comes to these types of things. A cat that is hot will find a shady spot near the floor, in the dark, possibly behind a toilet...in terms of the question at hand, your kitty will find a place in a sunny window, near a space heater or warm person. My kitty will make herself a little nest in the blankets, go under the covers in our bed....or curl up really close to one of our bodies. My favorite is when she burrows next to my neck. hehe...if your kitty is cold, kitty usually deals with it.
