It's about a little girl growing up in the south, during the 1950s, and how she experiences racism and ignorance in the small town that she grows up in. It has much more to it, sure, but that's the gist of it. I loved it simply because the characters just grow on you, especially her father. You should read it if you get the chance.

start with the Holy Bible!! You would be surprised just what wisdom you may find. Did you know it is the oldest book in the history of time. Its also the most produced and published book in the world. That alone tells us how much God loves His creation. Look on your dollar bill or even a penny and what does it say. Do not trust in money but in God who made the trees we print the money on or the diamonds that are just rocks that grow in the dirt yet shine so bright when polished. Let the Word polish you and you will be brighter then any diamond could compare. You can go to Him night or day. I promise you He will always listen. If its 3 am and your lonely just talk to Him. See how you feel a few minutes later then you decide for your self!! He will protect you, comfort you, love you for ever. But he lets us choose too. No one will make us read it and you do not need to tell anybody if you do. But after you will be like me telling every body how real He is. I apologize if you all ready know this!! I just could not resist. Thank you little one. God Bless You. ps. I did not know virginia is in tennessee. hehe Thats a beautiful name!!

(i'm just going to note here that this comment with be split up into many separate comments because of the character limit. i apologise before hand, this is a very long comment, but i took the time to write it, so it'd be great if you could read it.)

This of course depends on the genre of books you like to read, and even more importantly, which age groups are they prefered by.
if you like well written books with graphic sex, murder, rape, suicide, ect scenes, then go for Tami Hoag for sure, she is amazing. and no, she is not a smut author, she just doesn't do the "fade to black" for her crime/drama/fiction novels. she is my all time favourite author, and i am also a 15 yr old girl. Kill the messenger, and Ashes to Ashes, are two of my favourites of hers.

if you want teenage drama with slight possible romance, plenty of humor, angst, and fun, then Cassandra Clare with her "the Mortal Instruments(does not refer to music)" series, a well written interesting fantasy/humor series, with all the wonderful mythical creatures you could ask for, vampires, werewolves, faeries, pixies, warlocks, Shadow hunters (protectors of humans) demons, angels...i'm sure there are more, but these species are less cliché, and a little more realistic (though they still have the general logic, vampires still drink human blood and hate werewolves, faeries are cruel little bitches that cannot physically lie, yet twist the truth wickedly, shadow hunters, although charged with protecting humans feel this superiority over them that cannot be avoided when one race is stronger than another, ect.)
Twilight is a series loved by many teenage girls, though i never cared for it myself, i can see the appeal. i personally don't like the writing style.
Vampire diaries and Vampire Academy are popular with our age groups also, i enjoyed the TV series of VD, but i haven't read the books for wither of these choices.

Jodi Piccoult writes books that address some controversial issues, mostly to do with Law, Medicine, Practiced Cultures, and novels that force the reader to "choose a side", a who is right and who is wrong situation, eg. was the husband really wrong to kills his terminally ill wife who begged for death? he handed himself to the police straight after, saying he killed her out of mercy. but murder is still murder, merciful or not. that particular novel is titled "Mercy".
i really, really enjoyed the series "The nightingale floor" though i think that's just the title of the first book. it's set in japan in the times of ninja and samurai, the main character being a young boy, 16 if i remember correctly (which is young for slicing people into little pieces if you ask me) there is a lot about honor, culture and tradition, and is written by Lian
Hearn, a woman who studied the culture and lived over there for many years, so i'd say the info is accurate. anyway, there's a lot of politics, but it's less stupid than todays politics. this isn't a brilliant description on my part, but if Japanese culture interests you, then this is a well recommended read.

Terry Pratchett is hilarious, he writes fantasy/humor, and has some of the oddest characters, yet he has a fluent writing style with humorous little side notes at the bottom adding extra little jokes through the text. i love Going Postal, and it's sequel Making Money, the main character being a con man who is saved from the gallows by the ruler and given the choice of death... or fixing up the local post office into a functional and profitable business :P please, if you have watched any of the movies based on these novels, do not judge the novel by the movie, although the movies keep pretty well to the story line, they are NOWHERE near as good, i haven't even finished watching the Hogfather because it bored me to death, when i absolutely loved the book. so disregard anything you have learnt from the movies, it is irrelivant in regards to the novel.
Report as
and lastly but certainly not least, Tamora Peirce is a great author. i've been reading her books since i could read, i grew up on them, but my dad has been reading them since before i was born, so don't think they are childrens books (i just had mature taste in books as a kid) they're fantasy/humour/survival, some of the books have romance. most of her books are from a very female point of view, usually the main character being a young female who works her butt off to be just as damn strong as the boys, both physically and mentally. it is a world of magic and nights, where the king's word is the law. nobles and commoners are just a way of life, and status means quite a lot. the first series is Alanna the Lioness, about a girl who switched places with her twin brother and went to train as a night in the disguise of a boy.
Report as
stop freaking out, a very select few of her most trusted friends know of her gender, and a romance springs up (but don't get me wrong, this isn't the everlasting love that could never be broken kind of thing! she has several partners at different times) :P she has to work not only to keep her identity and gender hidden from friends and enemies alike, but to become as strong as a male, as skilled a fighter as a male, and as determined and ambitious as a male. (remembering that in these times males were considered superior to females) okay, well i think i spent a bit too much time on that quartet.... the next series is about a young girl is a time when females were allowed to train as a night yet none had done so as they were afraid, not interested, or not allowed. she suffers far worse bullying, yet never backed down from a fight, resulting in many a broken nose and black eye.
Report as
whoops sorry, insert just before my last post the line: there she suffers many hardships, particularly bullying and romance... yes, romance in an all boy's school o________0
Report as
another follows the story of an archer who just happens to be half god... in this world there are many Gods, for some of the stupidest things, and they are very real, sometimes interacting with humans :P anyway, another series follows the path of four young mages, all abandoned as children, wither through death or fear, one is a street rat, one is a noble girl, one is a goods trader and outcast of her people, and one is a merchant's daughter. they all have spicy personalities and a very interesting story ahead of them, focusing on controlling and developing their volatile magics and more often than not, saving their country from turmoil ^^' they all have very different magics, one is a plant mage, one a thread mage, one a weather mage, and one a blacksmith mage.
i fins that when i need to read a good story that doesn't drag out, yet has plenty of books in the series i go for Tamora Peirce, i often just have this urge to read her novels, as you can read them over and over again, and by the time you've finished all the books in that particular series, you'll have forgotten enough that if you really wanted to, you could start over again.
Report as
anyway.............. i'm really, truly sorry about all of this... honestly, i actually cut this down and it's still this long! i tried to give you a reason to go read these books, otherwise, if nothing actually grabs your attention, and you just get titles hurled at you, you won't have any urge to go read them... but i guess i got carried away. well, this is what happens when i start to describe books i love ^^’
i really hope you took the time to read this, because although i'm rambling, this is a large selection of different genre novels that are well written, and if you decide you think it sounds not like your thing that's fine, but at least having read this before making that decision will help you find an author you want to follow, because you can then say, oh, you're also recommending (insert author/s name here) and i though that sounded (insert verb here) so i think i'll (insert decision here)
i truly apologise for all the posts, i spent a long time writing this, so i hope some people at least take something away from it.

i also realised that somewhere in the middle there i let my grammar and spelling slip... well, it's late here and i've been typing for a while, i only just realised. sorry about that, i know it makes it hard to read, but i fixed what i could when i realised it.

read the bible. It has many great lessons for you to learn. It is the oldest book (ever)! Without the bible, many people would be led astray. Even if you are not a Christian, the bible will help you learn a lot and will help you catch up on your history! ;) Jesus died for our sins so we may live forever. :) John is a great book of the bible to start at. Or Genesis.
