Get those little window and door alarms that beep if a door or window is opened...they are very inexpensive and sold by First Alert. Show your child how they work and that he is safe because he can call 911 if an alarm goes off. They are great for "monsters" in the closet too!
Get a security system and assure them someone is always watching them. Or you can even let the child see the monitor and have cameras to watch the outside as well as the inside. Then they can see for themself that its ok to be alone.

Don't leave them alone until they can fend for themselves! In other words, they have know what to do if something starts to burn, how to tell which sounds they hear in a house are normal. They have to know when to call 911 and a lot of other things so they can protect themselves. And, they do not know those things at the age of 8!
Be truthful to your children - don't tell them things like "the teddy bear is me" - most children know it is not you and if a child is too young to know this - for sure they are too young to leave alone.
Lastly, if you ask an important question in a forum like this remember most people who answer are not experts and are merely parroting what they have heard from others.
