Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to win an Oscar, the year was 1960 and she won for her role in Gone With the Wind. In 2006 the Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in her honor.

Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American win an Oscar. She won Best Supporting Actress for her performance of "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind in 1940.
