What can happen when you have high blood pressure?

When you have high blood pressure, blood flows through your arteries with too much force. Over time, this damages the walls of your arteries. They get rough spots on them where fat and calcium (plaque) builds up. Plaque makes your arteries narrower and stiffer. Blood can't flow through them as easily and begins to starve and damage bodily organs.

high blood pressure (hypertension) is a risk factor for strokes, heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease, and may damage your eyes and/or kidneys.
it is referred to as the "silent killer' because you will not experience any symptoms unless it is extraordinarily high. then you might experience headaches or visual problems.
everyone should know what their blood pressure normally runs. this can be done at a doctor's office, any fire station, and most grocery store pharmacies have blood pressure machines. you can also buy a cheap one for about 20-30 bucks at most pharmacies.

When a person has high blood pressure, even if they are on a prescribed med to control it, they still need to change their lifestyle habits, such as stop smoking, change diet, add exercise to their daily routine, and decrease drinking alcohol beverages. If left untreated, it can lead to an increased risk of heart attack and/or stroke, and then, if still left untreated and no lifestyle habits have been decreased or stopped completely, can lead to death.
