When you have high blood pressure, blood flows through your arteries with too much force. Over time, this damages the walls of your arteries. They get rough spots on them where fat and calcium (plaque) builds up. Plaque makes your arteries narrower and stiffer. Blood can't flow through them as easily and begins to starve and damage bodily organs.

When a person has high blood pressure, even if they are on a prescribed med to control it, they still need to change their lifestyle habits, such as stop smoking, change diet, add exercise to their daily routine, and decrease drinking alcohol beverages. If left untreated, it can lead to an increased risk of heart attack and/or stroke, and then, if still left untreated and no lifestyle habits have been decreased or stopped completely, can lead to death.
