What was an Archimedian Screw ?

Report as

A good description of the action of the Archimedes' screw, with animation, may be found here: http://www.ask.com/wiki/Archimedes'_screw
Not used very much nowadays with modern pumps, but you can still see an Archimedes' screw (two in fact!) in action at Sea World San Diego's Shipwreck Rapids ride, where the screws boost the water up to the loading platform. If you're not in the San Diego area, you can see a picture here: http://www.themeparks.ie/northamerica/swsd/rp1.htm
