Switching to Wifi

I'm trying to switch from a wired network into a wifi network. At first, I thought all I had to do was switch around some wires into a new router. Now, a friend told me that when he switched, he had to do a bevy of other software-related things. I guess the question is, what do you have to do to switch from wired to wifi?
