My kid stealing money from my wallet. how can I trap him

it's been a couple of months since I noticed that money it's missing from my wallet and my wife purse. I am very sure this has something to do with my 16 yrs old Kid but he always denied when we ask him. We usually leave the wallet and purse all over the place because we never have this problem. I am very sure he is taking the money, but i have no proof, I would like to catch him. if there is any body have any ideas that wants to share. Gracias and sorry for my misspelling.

Draw a small mustache on all of your bills in pencil.

Leave it alone for a few days. Then purchase a packet of fake mustaches or make your own with black construction paper. Slowly add them to anything in his room that has a face. If you have stuffed animals in the house, tape mustaches to them as well and leave them in his room and in the bathroom and everywhere around the house. Do not answer any questions about this. Claim that you do not know. Smile enigmatically. After about a week of this, begin to wear the fake mustaches yourselves. Put one on him while he's sleeping. On the same day you do this, leave your wallet somewhere obvious so that he will be tempted to steal from it. Leave a fake mustache in your wallet with a note attached that reads 'your mother and I mustache you a few questions about your behavior, son.'
I doubt the issue will come up again.

You can set up a hidden camera and leave your wallet where the camera can watch it. That way you have proof of who has the sticky fingers. It is very important for you to get the one doing it so you can straighten him out before he gets into more trouble elsewhere.

Good luck!

Make a small mark on your bills with an ink pen, so small that you wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it. Then when you notice money gone you can tell him to empty his pockets and check the bills. If nothing else he will know that you are on to him and if he's smart he will stop.

Put your iPhone on camera mode & aim it at your wallet/ purse or stop it all together by hiding your money and leave an empty wallet there to see what happens when u leave a dollar or two. Will they take it ? Or just calmly sit down and tell them what your noticing and inform everyone of the consequences ahead of time if caught stealing . Being a parent myself, I'd also be looking for signs of drugs & if you are on prescriptions fir pain keep an eye on those too. You don't know if they are stealing but u have a pretty good clue they are if they are stealing $ what r tgey using it for ? I would still hold a family meeting so EVERYONE is on the same page & is warned of conserquences of actions .

You seem like a good dude - sorry for your conundrum. Personally, I'd take a $20 bill and fold it in half w/ an attached post-it note inside that says,

"Dear Carlos, Your mom & I love you, but if you ever take money from us again - we will call the police for your own good. Next time - just ask. Love, Dad"

That'll straighten him out while showing him you still care for him. It's also easier than the lethal boobytrap you were considering.

In my opinion you should keep questioning him until he is forced to tell the truth. If that don't work then I agree with what others said above, mark the money to know that it is your money

I have a brother with this stealing problem. the most I have had missing is $120 at one time! 50 here 50 there, sometimes 20, pretty much every time I had a significant ammount of money. 1- marking it doesnt work because he hides it/no one sees it. 2- leaving a note is just going to make him put it back exactly how it was and he will pretend it never happened. 3- put it in a safe or get a camera. its the only way left!

i feel the only solution would be to keep your money with you at all times? Theres really other way and this habit can lead to many other factors which include robbery of other victims. Best of Luck
