can you tell me why the number 13 is unlucky

Apparently, only in western cultures do people believe in the unlucky number 13. They say that it is because witches’ coven always consists of 13 witches or that during the last supper of Jesus Christ, they were thirteen in number--Jesus plus his twelve disciples. A lot of buildings also dispense the number 13 as a floor, and jump from 12 to 14 instead. There is even a phobia named after the number 13, triskaidekaphobia.
