Why do cats lick themselves a lot?

Report as

Cats lick to keep them clean, to relieve themselves of varmints like fleas, to calm themselves, and to absorb Vitamin D. Also during warm weather, cats lick themselves to keep cool. They do not have sweat glands or pores, so the layer of saliva acts like human sweat by drying and evaporating, lifting heat away from the cat's body. You know how they refuse to take baths and hate water? It's because they rely on their tongues to lick themselves clean:)
