How is history best understood - as basically a factual report, as a reconstruction, or . . .?

fanciful and wishful thinking. most history books are lying to you about something or they're just wrong and based on halve truths and misconceptions. the ones that aren't are maliciously lying to you to further their own agendas. view history as a fable or fairy tale meant to instruct you on what not to do and you'll be just as close to the truth as if you believed all the stuff you read in the books was gospel
