The Spanish–American War was a 'short war' happening in 1898 between Spain and the US. It erupted as a result of American intervention in the ongoing Cuban War of Independence. Revolts against Spanish rule had been staged for decades in Cuba and these were closely watched by Americans. Much as the US military leadership wished to avoid an armed conflict, compromise proved impossible, resulting in an ultimatum sent to Madrid demanding it surrender control of Cuba immediately. The demand was rejected and soon US and Spain declared war on each other. The War lasted about 4 months. For further reading, please go to www.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/1898/chronology.html and other sites.
