Give up something that is a bad habit, or is bad for you, that you enjoy. Some thing that represents a sacrifice to you. This challenge will remind you of your need for the Savior that sacrificed His life for your sins (the meaning of Easter). By the end of the Lenten season you are better off for struggling to give this up, and have deepened your relationship with the Lord, as you turn to Him and depend on Him to help you overcome your bad habit/ challenge.
I have a bad habit of staying up way too late. It affects lots of other things/people in my life, yet I continually do it. So for Lent, I am going to set a bedtime for myself and ask the Lord to give me the desire to do what is right. So, I am giving up "staying up late every night" (and chocolate) for Lent. If you knew me, you would know what a BIG sacrifice this is for me, seriously. (don't laugh :-))
Let us know what you choose.

I completely agree. You should give up something that is a weakness. I am giving up coffee and coffee drinks. Lent is a time to observe sacrfices and the sacrifices that christ made for us and our sins.

My belief is that Lent is a time to take away something that is pulling me away from God: something that I feel I depend on when I know I am supposed to completely depend on Him. I personally am giving up facebook; but the important thing is whatever you choose: when you find yourself wanting to do whatever you promised not to do, take that time and pull out your Bible, or pray. Make it a Lenten season that brings you closer to Him. God Bless.

You don't really have to give up anything, but I'm giving up every drink except water and all fast food. I'm also going to boost my excercise regimen from once a week to twice a week. You could maybe promise to DO something instead of give something up...?

Give up something that's distracting you from Jesus. Like Twilight was a distraction for me so I had to lay off but now im closer to God because of that break from my favorite thing.

Traditionally you give up eating meat! But you are suppose to give up something you like a lot as a sacrifice.

Lent is about remembering why Jesus died. He died because we think and do evil things. These things anger God, and such evil is destined to be reduced to ash one day.

For background, Lent is the 40-day period prior to Easter Sunday (excluding Sundays). The period of 40 days is representive of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tempted by Satan. During that time, he fasted. During Jesus's 40 days in the wilderness, Satan tempted him with all kinds of things - wealth, power and authority - if Jesus would bow down and worship him. Jesus refused and resisted everything the devil offered - because he knew the real deal - there was only one true God, and Satan wasn't Him. And, furthermore, that Satan didn't truly have the power to give Jesus all those things he was promising - all things belong to God and Him alone.
So, it is very easy to draw the analogy between what Jesus did (resisting evil) and our ongoing battle to resist temptation. And to incorporate fasting - which is what people do during this season - fast, or 'give up' certain items, as a means of following in Jesus's footsteps. A time to become closer to God and reflect on who He is and what He has done for us.

I give up things I don't care about/do. Ex. This year I gave up listening to rap music.
I don't listen to rap. :) I'm a sneaky snake
