Being a survivor, I believe it has to do with abnormal cells vs healthy cells. Go onto a cancer site such as American Cancer Society to find out. In any event, if you have questions, go to a Cancer doctor such as an Oncologist for info if you have a questionable problem and don't wait!!!

Benign tumors develop slowly and can arise from any tissue. They tend to remain encapsulated and do not infiltrate any surrounding tissue.
Malignant tumors on the other hand do have the ability to invade the surrounding tissue. Malignant tumors can represent a serious threat to the life and well being of a person. Cancer cells are variable in appearance and disorderly with irreversible changes in structure. One of the primary reasons for a malignant tumor is genetic disease, the responsible gene or chromosomal abnormality is a mutation in the individual. Hope this helps. : ) littlebit98
