Christian is a faith, a religion, the belief in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Catholic is a church, a denomination, a sect, a group, a specific type of christian. The pope in Rome is the head of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world.

Other denominations of the christian faith are Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Adventists, Etc. They all have their own chuch congregations and practice variations of the Christian religion. There are many Different denominations of christian churches besides the ones I listed.
All catholics are christians, but not all christians are catholics. Not to be disrespectful, but just in the interest of clarity, it's similar to saying "all McDonalds are restaurants but not all restaurants are McDonalds"

Another key point is that you do not need to be affiliated with a specific church to consider yourself a christian. You are a christian if you believe in Jesus Christ as Savior. No other requirement is necessary.

Sorry, but that's not true. Roman Catholicism wasn't established as such until AFTER The Great Schism in the Byzantine Orthodox church. Orthodox is the older Roman Christian sect--but still not all Christians were Orthodox either. One has but to read the proceedings of the first 5 Ecumenical Councils to get a list of all those major Christian sects that Rome determined to be heretic.

Gnostic, Copt, Syriac, and Chaldean Christians are all older than Byzantine (Roman) Christianity.

There is no god. You made him up.
Report as
Nerd Lover, why are you implying that Catholic don't believe in one God?
Report as
No a Christian is one who believes Jesus was the son of god and savior of earth. Jews and Muslims can live god too , that doesn't make them Christian.
Report as
NerdLover, Catholics don't worship idols. I've looked it up.
Report as
Having saints doesn't constitute worship.

You are right because you are confident? No offense, but...LOL
I am Catholic. I *know* Catholics don't worship idols.

Implying, of course, that He hasn't blessed me...

If God has blessed you with what you believe, then believe it. Just because He "blessed and saved" you doesn't mean you know about other beliefs.

NerdLover, what do you know about Catholicism that I, as a Catholic, wouldn't? I have seen a "world outside my own". I've seen it, tested it, and found it lacking. There are things I've seen in Protestantism that don't make sense, and despite numerous questions put to Protestants, they remain unanswered and unresolved. I've seen and tested atheism, to find similar holes and inconsistencies. And numerous other religions. I'm not Catholic because I'm ignorant; I'm Catholic because I agree with it. Don't insult my intelligence.

Not true. If that were true there would be no such thing as Protestants, and the Reformation wouldn't have occurred.

Come to think of it, The Great Schism wouldn't have happened either, nor would have the bazillion different Christian denominations come into being.

Say: "Both. Catholics are Christians, and the oldest kind there is."

What's disturbing about this question is that some protestant churches are teaching (as I was taught as a child) that Catholics are not Christians. It's the first step toward "my-God-is-better-than-your-God" and THAT is the basis of all religious hatred.

A Sydney journalist in Dublin during the 1980s was walking back to his hotel when somebody held a gun to his head and said, "Are you a Catholic or a Protestant?" He had the presence of mind to say, "I'm an Australian>" We're an irreligious lot Down Under and he was allowed to go with a warning not to return.

Obviously many parsons are still teaching the Catholics are not "true" Christians (there's that TRUE word again) and the hatred continues.

Ah, Christian love -- it has some fascinating parameters.

Ah, Dozy, how well I know. . . all the time people tell me I'm not a "true" Christian, and won't budge no matter how I explain it. My own little way of trying to help the whole situation is through music -- almost every gig my band plays, we perform a lovely Irish tune called "There Were Roses", about the religious hatred between Protestants and Catholics. It's a beautiful song, and I know I've helped when I see tears in the eyes of our audience.
Report as
It's a beautiful song. I just listened to Tommy Sands sing it.

For the ground our fathers plowed in the soil is just the same,
And the places that we say our prayers have just got different names...
Report as
Och, yes -- if only everyone would look at it that way, there'd be so much less violence in the world.

And your religion would be bashing other religions, right?

I have no religion. Why don't people wake up and stop believing this crap.

Because they, unlike you, have read Aquinas and believe in higher thought.

Earth was created in the big bang. The first people here were hominids. They change over time. That's why we now something else is going to happened. There is no heaven or hell.
Report as
Um, what banged?
Also: existence is an attribute: the universe and everything in it is contingent. Why, then, is it here?
Also: why is it here *as it is* in all its complex perfection?
Evolution doesn't disprove the existence of a Supreme Being, so don't give me that. "God can't possibly exist because things mutate!" is not that brilliant an argument.

Actually Catholicism isn't the oldest branch of Christianity. The Catholics were just more ruthless and wiped out their competitors with sword and flame.

I don't know who would ask you that. Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, united, etc are all branches of the Christian religion. Christianity believes Jesus was the son of god and savior of earth.
