What is crossing over, when does it happen in meiosis, and why is it important?

Report as

In meiosis type of cell division crossing over happens during the pachytene stage where the non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange segments over homology. Crossing over is important because it allows the offspring produced to have some variation since it has genes from both parents. You can get more details on meiosis on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiosis.
