Before the secession began in 1861 that led to the Civil War, there were forty-two states in the United States. Thirteen of those states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Not true. There were nine territories and thirty-three states in 1860.

Actually there were only 33 states in the U.S. in 1860. The rest were territories.
