Can a young kitten act ill or depressed with their first heat cycle

she was fine yesterday but today no real appetite and my male keeps licking at her rump

It is very possible that she is getting ready to start her first heat cycle. When our kitten had her first heat she was exceptionally quiet and not herself for 2 to 3 days and then she became the boisterous female cat that we hear about all the time. She would sit in the window howling away for any male cats that would listen. I think that the female cats, much like human females, probably have mood swings when they go into heat which can include depression and annoyance with everyone around them.
