Why does a damp sponge absorb more water then a dry one?

This is mainly because of the properties of water itself. It should be eminent that water itself is very sticky which makes a wet sponge to be more effective at retaining water than a dry one. Find more details on http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4661324_do-sponges-absorb-water.html.
