Hi linkster55. Like most sore throats, yours should get better with time. Until it does, a salt water gargle can provide some relief, as can any number of over the counter medicines, as some other posters have noted. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen can ease the pain, and tea with honey is a classic cure for sore throat.
You'll also want to avoid aggravating an already sore throat. Household cleaners can bother an already sore throat, so leave cleaning the bathroom for another day. And if you smoke, stop for a few days--at least--as cigarettes can irritate the throat.
If your sore throat persists for more than a few days, though, it may be time to see your doctor and get tested for strep throat, which can be potentially serious if left untreated.

Short term fix, Alka Seltzer Plus Cold and Cough tablets in water. For some reason the gel tabs don't work as well for me. Long term fix: what's the reason you have it? Smoker with COPD beginning? Allergies? Asthma? If over the counters don't help and it hangs on too long, get to a doctor for help! Feel better soon!
For bad Sore throats, try Chloriseptic. It's at the drugstore as a spray. When you spray it down your throat, it numbs it for a while. When I had strep throat--really awful sore throat--the doctor recommended it to me. It's also available in a lozenge I think.
If phlegm comes up when you cough don't use any kind of expectorant (dextromethorphan, codeine, etc.). If it doesn't or if your cough turns into a dry hacking cough get an OTC cough medicine with dextromethorphan listen in the active ingredients. If this doesn't work go to the doctor and get a cough syrup with codeine and that should help stop the coughing and relieve your sore throat. Just don't take more than prescribed by your doctor.
