If there is a fire in a house,how big are you supposed to cut the air vent for the smoke to escape?

Are you talking about a fire that has been subdued and is under control, because normaly you are supposed to evacuate and let professionals with firefighting tools and ladder trucks and fire hoses do the fire related tasks like venting the smoke if necessary.

Air vents will make it burn faster. No vent needed.
