I have a 1997 Honda CR-V, and I'm experiencing what I believe to be a problem with the fuel pump. Can driving with no gas cap cause this?

Report as

Yes it may be the cause because air is getting inside the gas area. Put on the gas cap and observe to see if the problem continues and if it does, visit your local mechanic to establish the problem.

Ok. It won't start, but it cranks just fine. I have a hunch this is indeed the problem, because I keep up with the maintenance on this car and all.

Yes it can. Some vehicles use gas caps that allow air in and some use them that seal the gas tank.

No gas cap will not prevent your car from starting. A bad fuel pump relay will prevent it from starting. Determine if you have spark and fuel pressure at the cold start valve or injector.
