As a wave moves through water, what happens to the surface of the water?

Report as

The surface of the water stretches resulting in wrinkles. The surface becomes rougher as the waves form. The surface tension then acts on these winkles to restore the smooth surface. The roughness and smoothness entirely depends on the waves.
