I'm on the football team and lift weights a lot, Should I take protein drinks to help with my workout? If I do, do i drink before or after?

Both. Buy yourself one jug of whey protein powder and one jug of casein protein powder. Take a serving of whey when you wake up, 30 min before you lift, and as soon as your done lifting. Take a serving of casein protein before bed.

I was told to take it before or after a workout, not before bed. Not before bed because I was told I'd get fat. I have no idea what to do

Casein protein is a slow digesting form of protein. It will prevent your body from entering a catabolic stage while you sleep. Trust me on this. I played football, wrestled and power lifted competitively. Follow my instructions on your protein consumption.
