If your card was declined in an online transaction, you likely need to register it first. Some online retailers need a billing address to process your gift card, and your gift card doesn?t come with a billing address.

Note: You cannot register your card?s billing address online. You have to call AMEX Gift Card Customer Service at 1.877.AXP.GIFT to register an address to the card.

Is the Card ready to use immediately?
Gift Card In most cases, as soon as you sign the back of the Gift Card, it is ready for use. However, in some cases, it may be inactive for up to four hours after purchase.

eGift Card No. The recipient must activate the eGift Card by following the instructions delivered to the recipient via email.

The value on the Card at any time is its "Available Balance." You may check your Available Balance at americanexpress.com/mygiftcard or by calling Customer Service at 1-877-297-4438.

eGift Card The eGift Card may be used at Merchants in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands that accept the American Express Card. Because there is no physical card associated with an eGift Card, it may not be accepted by Merchants for in-store purchases.
