What's a real good commuter bike?

I know it's like the default question, but I seriously need suggestions. under $590 please. but j will take a look if it's over my limit.

Personally, I prefer the Cross-check. It's one of the best riding, most versatile bikes around and the frame is comfy and tough as nails and versatile too.
