Why did they add the snow monster part to star wars?

Report as

The snow monsters you are referring to is called Wampas. They are Yeti-like creatures that live on the sixth planet called Hoth. In the movie, Luke is captured by a Wampa and trapped in a cave completely updside down frozen to the ceiling. He is able to retrieve his lightsaber to cut himself loose and cuts the Wampa's arm off. 9 years later Luke returns to Hoth and encounters the very same snow monster with a severed arm and Luke prevails again by killing him. Without this scene, we would never have known or seen a Wampa or a massive snow monster!

I was told and wasn't sure if it was myth or not but heard they added that part because Luke Skywalker had a horrible crash in real life. To explain the scars on his face they had to have the yeti or ice monster attack him. It made sense to me because the scene was so random and useless. I should have been more clear in my question, but wanted to know if this was a known fact. Thanks for an answer :)

To add more thrill because I didn't know what was going to happen.
