What do I do if I miss a week of active birth control pills after finishing a pack?

I've been on birth control for about two years now, and I've been consistent with taking them correctly. For some reason, this month I'm a week early for my insurance to kick in and cover the cost of another three-month pack. I went into the pharmacy and it wasn't going to be covered til exactly one week later. I'm planning on picking up the pills when they'll be covered. Should I wait until I have my next period to start the pills or should I start them when I get them? I don't want to mess with my cycle and cause my period to be skipped or cause breakthrough bleeding. What would be the best thing for me to do (besides use other forms of birth control for the first couple weeks back on the pill) to prevent any difficulties from happening?

Thank you!!!

You (and all women) need to ask your doctor to prescribe 13 months of birth control. The pill is taken over a 4-week period, not a monthly basis. If you do the math, there are 52 weeks in a year, so that means that you need one extra pack for a full year's prescription. I had to point this out to my Doctor (a female) and then she corrected her scripts for all her patients.
Call your doctor and explain this and ask for an extra pack. Don't skip any pills if you are sexually active...or abstain until you bring your levels back up.

Personally, I would suggest you consult your health care provider for guidance. You must use another birth control method as a back-up on the seven days after you restart your pills.

Just start your pills as soon as you get them again, & use backup BC until you finish that first pack. Especially if you've already been on the pill for more than a year, this should work out all right. Or, as mentioned in a previous answer, don't have sex for a month. It CAN be done. There are lots of other reasons people don't have sex for that amount of time, or even longer, & it is possible.
