What does the Establishment clause say that the government can not do?

It prohibits the federal government from establishing a state religion, like many European governments had at that time. The 14th amendment extended this prohibition to the states.

The establishment clause prohibits the government from entering into religious domain to make accommodations in order to attain the purposes of the Free Exercise Clause.
