Febreze or something similar. Then on a nice day, leave car outside with doors open to air out.

Febreeze won't work on gasoline. It's an oil base. It will stay until residue is out of carpet. It can take weeks to air out.

This smell will never completely go away. Replace your carpets if you plan on keeping this car.

I've cleaned gas out of the carpet of many cars. It takes about 20 minutes and less than 10 dollars

What do you use?

I first clean with a heavily deluged simple green... Like 1:10 it cuts the oil out. (this works on grease and oil) you may have to clean with simple green 3 or 4 times if its a dark stain on light colors.

After that I use a heavy duty carpet cleaner (even on seats carpet cleaners help get rid of oders and are made for deep cleaning).

then I use an upholstery cleaner or spray heavily with something like febreeze and use it like a cleaner to push it deep in and kill any lingering smells.

I've cleaned cars that had strawberry shakes spilled on white fabric all the way to a car for a car lot that had been used to transport chickens in the back seat. The chicken car had a mild smell but it was passable. (this car took forever to clean. I pulled everything out and even pulled part of the dash apart. Guy paid 100 at the lot 300 for me been driving it for 10 years. The strawberry car wasn't noticeable.

But in my mountaineer I keep puppy pee pads in case I need to move anything that might smell... They absorb tons. Like 20 bucks at Wal mart for tons of piece of mind.
