One of the marks on a number is often labelled zero. The successive marks to the left and the right of it represents a particular unit, for instance 1 or -1. The numbers to the right of the zero are positive and the numbers to the left are negative.
It's all relative. If it gives you a unit measure, use that but otherwise you have to see it in a relative manner
by using one of the existing lines that has been labeled but it depends if it going by,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10...ect.
