Some people suggest pricking the bratwurst sausage casing with a fork to prevent it from bursting. Into a covered frying pan, put about 1/2 inch of water and the sausage and cover. Cook over medium until the water has evaporated but do not boil. A slow simmer is what is needed. Uncover and let the sausage brown. Chop onions and add to the pan. After the onions have browned you can add a cup of beer and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve and enjoy.
Bratwurst can be cooked indoors three ways. Brats can be added to a pot of boiling water and boiled for about 20 minutes. Bratwurst can also be cut into slices and sauteed, which should take less than 10 minutes. Bratwurst can also be made in an oven, cooked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit on a roasting rack for about 20 minutes.
