What would you likely see in an Italian slum of new York around the time period of Jacob Riis?

Since he made efforts to reduce the bad living conditions that were evident during his period for the poor people, I think it would be full of hard working people. He would find ways for people to get better living conditions and create employment. He is also known for his efforts to help impoverished New York City and he wrote about them and had photography on them too.
