There are a LOT of rumors about moonshine and I'll lend my $.02 as a distiller. First of all, like brewing beer it is NOT cheaper to produce your own than it is to buy it off the shelf. Everclear is 190 proof and is available in Jersey for about $15 a 750ml bottle. That's a LOT of alcohol for the $$. Dilute it down with distilled water to half its' proof and you're still at 90 proof for about $7 and change. That's also the recommended approach seeing as drinking 190 proof grain alcohol is about as pleasant as drinking battery acid. And you will not find a moonshiner anywhere that can distill at 200 proof or 100% alcohol. Even the best and oldest claim to hit the 180 proof mark.To make a 5 gallon batch of wash costs about $15 or so in water, sugar, cracked corn, yeast, ect and I yield 4-5 pints of 130 proof shine after the whole process. Then take into consideration the brewing, 10 days fermenting, distilling, equipment costs, ect. Bottom line it's better/cheaper to just buy everclear and half it to yield more product and less cost. That and you won't have to fret over impurities like methanol/acetone in your shine that can blind/kill you.
Moonshine is often above 100 proof, 200 proof being 100% alcohol. It has a raw burning flavor and really packs a punch. One other thing to remember is that moonshine is illegal to produce and therefore illegal to posess.
