What Proof Is Moonshine?

Report as

There are a LOT of rumors about moonshine and I'll lend my $.02 as a distiller. First of all, like brewing beer it is NOT cheaper to produce your own than it is to buy it off the shelf. Everclear is 190 proof and is available in Jersey for about $15 a 750ml bottle. That's a LOT of alcohol for the $$. Dilute it down with distilled water to half its' proof and you're still at 90 proof for about $7 and change. That's also the recommended approach seeing as drinking 190 proof grain alcohol is about as pleasant as drinking battery acid. And you will not find a moonshiner anywhere that can distill at 200 proof or 100% alcohol. Even the best and oldest claim to hit the 180 proof mark.To make a 5 gallon batch of wash costs about $15 or so in water, sugar, cracked corn, yeast, ect and I yield 4-5 pints of 130 proof shine after the whole process. Then take into consideration the brewing, 10 days fermenting, distilling, equipment costs, ect. Bottom line it's better/cheaper to just buy everclear and half it to yield more product and less cost. That and you won't have to fret over impurities like methanol/acetone in your shine that can blind/kill you.

I dont even believe you know how to distill shine. I been doing since 13 years old and i can tell you right now, it all depends on what proof you want it at and the experience and skill you have making it. Every time i make it, I get it around 199.99 proof. I been drinking moonshine for 63 years. I've drank every type of moonshine from 100s of different bootleggers. It didnt start getting stronger until i made my own. Thats only becasue other people dilute it to make mmore money. Shit, if i was to sell it, id be diluting it too. I do 6 runs per batch to get the strongest. Even the backins is around 200 proof. I bought moonshine from people up until i was 22 years old and then i started making it myself. Before I made it my self, i could drink a double shot like it wasnt nothin. But as soon as i started making my own, I cant event take a single shot of my shit. Dont listen ta anything you read on the internet about how moonshine cant get around 200 proof. I promise that it does. You lose a little bit more liquor gettin it that high of a proof but ya dont lose that much. It will still knock you on your ass and it still a hell of a lot more cheaper that goin to the liqour store. I cost me 7 per gallon of moonshine that i make. And its top quality. My specialty is Cherry Maple. I'll keep the secret to that recipe till the day i die. So I'll anser this question with a question and anser....How much more time are you willing to take making it? Do you have about 1 dollar per gallon to lose beacuse of the wasted whiskey? I know the money loss adds up but guess what...so does the proof!!! But if your selling it, Make that shit as cheap as possible and run it twice.

The alcoholic beverage Moonshine is produced illegally and often made in varying proofs no less than 100 proof. There are rumors that in the mountains of Virginia, illegal distilleries make Moonshine.

You sound like you know what you are talking about. 100 proof is a good target. It comes off the still at a higher proof, but it's cut to about 100 proof to maximize output for sale.

Moonshine is an illegal liquor that is made mainly in the south. Most of the moonshine is 100% alcohol and 200 proof. It is very strong and can lead to alcohol poisoning if to much is consumed.

You have no idea what you are talking about. No corn liquor comes off the still at 200 proof. No liquor at all comes off the still at 200 proof. It's not possible. Good moonshine may come off the still at 180 proof or less, then it's cut with water, like legal whiskey. The aim is to maximize output while still retaining flavor and quality.

Moonshine is often above 100 proof, 200 proof being 100% alcohol. It has a raw burning flavor and really packs a punch. One other thing to remember is that moonshine is illegal to produce and therefore illegal to posess.
