how did strawberries get their name

Report as

There are many stories as to how the strawberry was named. One theory is that children in nineteenth century Europe used to pick the berries and place them on hay or straw stalks to sell. It is also believed that the name was derived from the Anglo-Saxon verb to strew because the runners that the plant uses to produce were seen to be "strewn" about the place where they were growing. It might also have come from the fact that the berries were ready for picking about the same time that hay was cut and harvested.
