Do female dogs have periods?

Report as

Yes, between 6-9 months you'll see blood spots around the house and yard. She will be a little crazy because her hormones are telling her to mate. It's best to have her spayed before she reaches this stage.

It's HORRIBLE how many dogs end up in 'kill shelters' and are killed for no other reason than they don't have room to keep them all.
In the county where I live one 'kill shelter' alone kills between 90,000 - 100,000 dogs each year !!! It hurts my heart to think about it.

Yes they do
It's called being in "heat" or their estrous cycle
When they start and stop or for how long is as unique to a dog as it is for people.
However, this will only occur about every 6 months or so

Can she be spayed during this cycle & if she is only 10 months?
Report as
It is way more expansive to spay during heat and many vets won't do it.
Report as
Yes, she can.

You in for some hard days but I would wait cause it is more expensive to do now.
Just really keep her under control cause you'll end up with puppies if you don't.
Report as
My vet doesn't do it unless for medical reasons.

No, female dogs do not have periods. They experience estrous cycle which is similar to the human's menstruation. They get on heat and she can easily get pregnant. She needs to be sprayed. Check out http://www.ehow.com/how_2317383_deal-dogs-menstruation.html.
