Oh, words cannot express the extent to which I adore the "Best in NYC" genre of questions. But enough about me, a quintessential New Yorker (the good and the bad, so to speak) and onto the pressing concern over your pursuit of pizza. I'm picking up on a relatively strong, out-of-town-will-be-visiting-shortly vibe from something subtle embedded in your question (my apology in advance if you're an Upper West Side native--and that's a mixed residential and business Manhattan neighborhood if you're really from afar), so my reply is adjusted accordingly (in other words, I'm refraining from sending you on a wild goose/pizza chase throughout New York's hinterland). In short, and among the many, many contenders, I would give the nod to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn--specifically, in a neighborhood not too far from (and get ready for this) DUMBO (= Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass = a surprisingly scenic and developed-from-shambles area between, and essentially under) two bridges: the Manhattan and Brooklyn. Grimaldi's is closer to and on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, which itself is a tourist attraction and a must see/walk over, and indeed, has memorable (in a good way) pizza--perhaps not the absolute best (remember, I'm striving to be user friendly here), but definitely up there in the rankings. Moreover, the location really is beautiful: situated right on the waterfront in Brooklyn overlooking Manhattan. And to sweeten the deal, there's yet another tourist hot spot just steps away--the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory--as well as Bargemusic (essentially a "floating musical boat," and I'll let you look that one up). Good luck on your journey, and please do try to send a mission report following the deed, if possible.
The best pizza place in New York City is Artichoke Basille's Pizza located at 328 E. 14th St. New York, NY. Their phone number is 212-228-2004. Good luck and I hope it is the best pizza you have ever eaten.
