When serfdom was abolished, what did most serfs become?

Report as

After serfdom was eliminated and feudalism essentially dismantled, serfs often became tenant farmers, doing almost exactly the same work they did as when they were serfs. The system was very much the same and those who were a part of one social class generally stayed in the same for generations.

When serfdom was abolished most former serfs became tenant farmers. They were to work the land to pay off the debt of owning the land.
