What may be the cause to white flakes around my eyelash follicles or on my eye lashes and what can I do to prevent them?

I started getting white flakes almost like dandruff on my eyelashes about two years ago and ever since I seem to get these flakes more frequently. I've tried washing my eyelashes with dandruff shampoo and it doesn't always make a difference. what could have caused this to start and what can I do to stop it or at least control it?

The cause of the white flakes could be an infection or even a case of Blepharitis in which the follicles of your eyelash become inflamed. Sharing eyelash equipment could also be the cause of the spread however consult a doctor for examination and be advised on the right course of action after a diagnosis is made. Wash eyelashes only with baby shampoo on a clean washcloth unless an ophthalmologist recommends otherwise. Definitely see an ophthalmologist immediately, you should have done so long ago.

Why do you suggest immediately? I've honestly just saw it as dry skin

I'm thinking it could be from some sort of bacterial infection or microscopic bug which are not uncommon on eyelashes. I would want to know for certain.
